17 boats came to the starting line, another well supported race in our Autumn Series. The weather forecast for a fresh 14–16 knot breeze moving to the East was very accurate.
A short first windward leg up to Inner Pylewell paid for those starting in the middle of the line and taking the shortest route which was reached without a tack.
Paul Woodman Ibex X 32 making the best start took the lead which he just managed to hold right to the finish. A close battle behind between 4 boats Condor X 183, Mayday X 161, Beatrix X 178 and Zest X9 followed right across the Solent to Bouy 9 off the Royal Solent Y C.
In 7th place was XL Rory Paton after a poor start but with plenty of speed both up and down wind. By the final beat XL was up to 3rd, Beatrix holding 4th and 5th Zest X 9 sailing with only Phil and Jo Brewer aboard a brilliant effort, giving Stuart Jardine and his rather elderly crew a close run for their money.
Up front, Ibex X 32 made their first mistake which was nearly very costly, failing to cover Condor X 183 who took the opportunity just failing to beat Ibex by 2 seconds.
Many thanks to the race team for giving us all some good racing in tricky conditions which are common for NW prevailing winds off Lymington.
