Welsh RYA Zone Championships at Cardiff Bay

North Wales sailor Callum Davidson-Guild enjoyed a near perfect record to claim the Welsh Optimists title, as more than 100 competitors aged from 6 to 16 took part in the Zone Championships in Cardiff Bay.

The Trearddur Bay/Shotwick Lake sailor won every race apart from a disqualification on the start line and a second place, both of which he could discard, to record a perfect score of seven points, with British Optimist Senior Champion Jamie Cook from the host club Cardiff Bay is second and Llyn Brenig's Tyler Green in third.

Mumbles' Maddie Leary was fifth and the top girl, with Llyn Brenig's Tasmyn Green in second and Tata Steel's Sophie Edwards in third.

Llangorse sailor Ben Willett was the top Topper with seven race wins out of nine, but two discards meaning he too registered a perfect total. New Quay/Mumbles sailor Duncan Lloyd Evans won the other two races, along with four second places, to take second overall.

Llandegfedd's Eabha Strong-Wright was third overall and top girl, with Dale's Lowri Boorman second Zoe Chase of Mumbles in third.

Another Llangorse sailor won the General Handicap, Theo Phillips posting five race wins with Matthew Leary in second and Llandudno's Eddie and Kevin Farrell in third.

The brothers won the RS Feva category, with Lucy Hughes and Molly Parrish of Pwllhelli 1st RS Feva Girls. Cardiff Bay's Alice Reynolds was top girl, with Rebecca Roberts in second.

In the Windsurf Fleet, Jack Shorrocks from Colwyn Bay Watersports won the Bic Techno 4.5 fleet, Catrin Willims (Menai Dragons) the 5.8 fleet, Sam Saunders also from Colwyn Bay Watersports the 6.8 fleet with Shayne Beaven from Tata Steel SC keeping up South Wales pride by winning the 7.8 fleet.

The Optimist, Topper & Tera Regatta Fleet all came off the water with happy, smiling faces. Cardiff Bay's Dylan Creiton won the Optimist class, Harry Pressede from Mumbles the Topper and Llandudno's Liam Farrel completing an excellent day for the family by winning the Tera class.

"It was great to have 117 sailors taking part with a very high standard at the elite end and plenty for everyone to enjoy," said RYA Cymru Wales high performance manager Paul Simes.

"Conditions in Cardiff Bay changed around and offered a variety of challenges, thanks to everyone who helped make one of the key events in the Welsh sailing calendar such a success once again."
