Comet Open at Littleton Sailing Club

Littleton Sailing Club was delighted to host a Comet Class Association, with 18 participants arriving for a packed day's racing. After a grey, cold and rainy Saturday, the weather on Sunday was excellent but lacking in wind.

Race Officer Simon Derham postponed the first race for half an hour, by which time the wind was starting to build, gaining in strength, albeit gently, for the rest of the day. Simon is to be congratulated on managing to schedule all 4 races despite the late start.

Littleton put forward a strong showing, with 7 members joining 11 visitors from as far afield as Bristol, Beer and Ogston. Stephen Lemmon (Littleton) once again challenged the front runners with 2 second places, whilst the remainder of the Littleton fleet battled for lower order places – led by Class Captain Andrea Watson who was overall placed 13th.

In a repeat of the 2015 Open results, junior Chris Hatton from Severn won, with Eddie Pope (Ogston) in second place and Stephen Lemmon (Littleton) in 3rd. Prizes were also awarded to best placed Grand Master – Bob Dodds (CYMC), Ancient Mariner – Henry Jaggers (Beer), and best placed junior outside the top 3 – Izac Dodds (CYMC).

Slow motion "nip and tuck" racing The forecast was for very light winds turning from the north to the south with bright conditions. When I arrived at the club, there was near zero wind in places on the reservoir. I wasn't too worried as we had over three hours until racing. A good sailing day after a dire forecast! Shustoke Sailing club hosted its first ever Comet Open on Sunday 16th July. Light steady winds for the 15 sailors Fifteen Comet sailors arrived at Burghfield Sailing Club for the Comet Open on Saturday 22nd April to find a becalmed reservoir with mist on the water. Race Officer James Anderson postponed the start until after an early lunch. Posted on 23 Apr 2023
