Ullswater Yacht Club welcomed racers from the RS200 fleet on the weekend of September 10 and 11 for the sixth event of the Northern Tour.

There was a great turnout of 16 entries, including excellent support from Beaver SC with six boats, and five races were planned for the two-day event. The welcome was warm but unfortunately the wind was not co-operating and no racing was held on Saturday. But it was more than made up for the conditions on Sunday, bright sunshine and good winds. With an early start, race officer Jon Abbatt and his team ran four races in the increasingly windy and gusty South-westerly winds.

The wind developed throughout the day, but despite the strong unexpected gusts, Oliver Groves and Esther Parkhurst of Beaver SC, mastered the conditions, taking the event with three firsts – discarding a second. They won race one, three and four with fellow Beaver members James Penty and Reg Grayson winning race two. Penty/Grayson took second place overall, with no result out of the top three, and Martin and Sian Joesbury from Budworth SC were third.

A special award for dedication was given at the prizegiving to Andrew Butterworth and Jane Hivey from Delph SC who arrived on Saturday to find they had left their rudder at home. So they drove back home to get it and took part in all four races on Sunday.

The Northern Tour would like to thank RS Sailing for their series support and Rope4Boats for raffle prizes. The next event is at Leigh and Lowton SC on September 24.
