2.4mR Open at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club

by Bruce Hill 11 Sep 2016 16:17 BST 3-4 September 2016

A small but well travelled fleet of five 2.4mR's raced on the weekend of 3rd and 4th September at Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club with entries far and wide from Frensham Pond in Surrey to Bardowie SC just north of Glasgow.

Saturday saw almost non-stop rain and a light and variable wind. The fleet sailed their preferred windward leeward courses set from the club's committee boat with the first and third race going to Bruce Hill and the second and fourth to Adam Billany followed in third by his father Shaun. The Stradivarius design sailed by Bruce was showing excellent speed in the light breeze and off the start but noticeably slower than the Norlins when the wind died off.

Sunday saw a fresher 15knt breeze and much drier weather plus an extra entry from the local fleet. Bruce won all four of these races followed again by Adam in all but the sixth race when Kathrin James from Rutland came in a well-fought second.

As the South hosts the majority events for this class it was great to see boats travelling so far and a really good well-run yet relaxed event. Hopefully it will be better supported with a larger entry next time, as Leigh and Lowton is such good sailing water in a great location.

1st Bruce Hill (Frensham Pond)
2nd Adam Billany (Derwent Water)
3rd Shaun Billany (Derwent Water)
4th Kathrin James (Rutland SC)
5th Rory McKinna (Bardowie SC)
