Squibs at the Waldringfield Sailing Club Cartoon Trophy

3-4 September 2016
Waldringfield SC hosted the annual Cartoon Trophies on 3/4 September where the coveted prize is a framed Giles cartoon.
For the whole weekend we enjoyed increasingly strong gusty winds. Race Officer Alan Krailing set excellent courses which kept the Squibs mostly separated from the capsizing dinghy classes which was much appreciated.
Six home Squibs were pleased to welcome our regular visitors, Andy Moore and Peter Hallinan, from neighbouring Felixstowe Ferry SC. They successfully defended their trophy against consistent pressure from William Sudell and Jo McArdle in 141. Best of the rest were who took third place.
Close racing and place changing encouraged the rest – David Moon and Steve Condie 721, Ricky East and Gill Lamb 745, Barry Searle and Susanne Eddis 468 and Steve Wood and Bob Whitehouse 615 and Geoff Payne and Martin Spall 804 who took third place overall.
The testing conditions, especially on Sunday, leave some good memories of shy spinnaker reaching down the back of the island which the heavier and more powerful crews took good advantage of. There were some excellent beats across the tide which provided challenges of where to go. We had six great races and now look forward to the start of the Autumn series next week.
