International Canoe Europa Cup at Plas Heli, Pwllheli - Day 2

by Chris Hampe 2 Sep 2016 08:27 BST 31 August - 4 September 2016

The International Canoe fleet have now completed two days of hard racing at the Welsh venue of Plas Heli at Pwhelli. The Europa Cup is being held here ahead of the World Championships at the same venue next year.

Those planning on competing in next year's worlds will pleased to know that the Llyn Peninsula has been basking in sunshine and the predominant south westerly winds have been blowing throughout the first two days.

The Championship started on Wednesday afternoon with a good force 4. With the panoramic mountain views from the racecourse the decision was either to head out to sea for more wind at the cost of a larger swell or head inshore in search of flatter water. It was great to see so many new faces on the start line and as the wind eased slightly the racing got tighter with close battles for positions throughout the fleet.

The race management were very quick to turn around the races with minimum delays and the scheduled program was adjusted for the second day to fit more racing in ahead of a strong wind forecast for the coming weekend. As it currently stands the canoes have completed four good races and the race for the podium places is as tight as it has ever been.
