Gul National 12 Burton Week at Brightlingsea Sailing Club - Day 2

by Fiona Brown 22 Aug 2016 14:12 BST 20-23 August 2016

After the disappointment of racing being cancelled on the opening day of Burton Week, day two delivered in spades with two great races in bright sunshine and a westerly breeze which was gusting up into the high twenties at the start of racing, but dropped off rapidly to the mid teens with gusts up towards the twenties as the afternoon wore on.

Race Officer Dave Charlton and his team were able to run two races on triangle/sausage courses which only required a minimum of course adjustment as the wind went right.

The strong flood spring tide added to the tactical complexity of the race, particularly on the runs which were pretty wet and wild at times. The quality of racing was outstanding throughout the fleet and it made a great sight for the spectators who had come out to watch in various RIBs, launches and yachts.

John Meadowcroft from Upper Thames SC, winner of the Burton Cup with wife Katy in 2008 and now sailing with son Ollie in D B Cooper, put in a superbly consistent performance to win both races in impressive style. Graham Camm and Zoe Ballantyne from Burghfield SC in The Hungry Caterpillar are in second place, five points behind the leader thanks to a third in race one and a fourth in race two. A single point behind them are Steve Sallis and Katy Meadow from Hykeham SC sailing Catbert, while another father son pairing, defending Burton Week Champions Tom and Robert Stewart from Fox Marina SC sailing Whitebait, are a further point back in fourth.

Tomorrow the fleet will race for the Sir William Burton Cup on a four lap course which cannot be shortened. This is one of dinghy sailing's most prestigious trophies and the list of past winners reads like a who's who of British dinghy sailing including Bruce Banks, Jack Holt, Tony Jardine, Peter Nicholson, Keith Musto, Cliff Norbury, Hugh Welbourn, Mike McNamara, Graham Bailey, Will Henderson, Andy Shorrock, Ian Pinnell, Chris Atkins and six time winner and defending champion Graham Camm to name but a few.

Weather and time permitting, the race officer may elect to run an additional series race after the Burton Cup is complete to catch up the series.

On Sunday night the fleet enjoyed the Burton Week dinner at Brightlingsea Sailing Club.
