GJW Direct Lark National Championship at Lyme Regis Sailing Club - Day 2

by Chris Whitehouse 21 Aug 2016 22:25 BST 20-23 August 2016

After a day onshore sheltering from 30+kts out in Lyme Bay, the Larks hit the water on day two of the GJW Direct Lark National Championship for 3 full on races in 20-25kts and epic waves!

Out of the blocks fastest in Race 1 were Chris Whitehouse/Simon Haighton, sailing 2523, Dizzy Gillespie winning the port end fight, leaving Charlie Roome/Eddie Lister, 2519, Wicked Rumours getting close and personal with the pin guard boat.

Stuart Hydon/Rachel Rhodes, 2495, Well Dodgy briefly took the lead, but the boys managed to sniggle past on a lefty shift, to take the race win.

Between races, Chris Fish sailing with his mum, Cathy Fish were seen shaking out their mainsail reef - remember folks, safety first.

Race 2 was led from start to finish by James Stewart/Jane Kearney, 2492, Florence, only to be met by deafening silence as they crossed the line - unfortunately OCS. Chris/Simon took their second bullet of the day. Followed by Stuart/Rachel and Nigel Hufton/Matt Wood, sailing their shiny new Winder Lark, 2538, Tiger Too.

The breeze cranked up a couple of knots prior to the third race. With ebb tide strengthening under the fleet, race 3 finally got away at third time of asking - unfortunately not without four boats heading home for an early bath.

Steve Hall/Holly Hewat, 2537 (name; tbc) won the start but it was Stuart/Rach who came in from the left hand corner to get to the windward mark first. They never headed and took the final victory of the day. Behind them, fierce racing, resulted in Alan Krailing/Ed Harris, 2521, Mozzy taking 2nd, and Steve/Holly digging in for third.

All in, the first days racing leaves Stuart/Rach leading, with Chris/Simon second and Steve/Holly third. The forecast is looking fantastic for two more days fabulous sailing in Lyme Regis.
