Rooster 2000 National Championship at Castle Cove Sailing Club - Day 2

by Chris Jordan 15 Aug 2016 18:06 BST 13-19 August 2016

After the light drifting winds on Sunday, the 18-23 knot easterly that blew at the Rooster sponsored 2016 National Championships for the 2000 class was a big change - welcomed by many, but the large rolling waves and bright very strong sunshine also led to a few crews getting dehydrated and seasick and not enjoying it as much as they should. Most boats survived the two tough races out in Weymouth Bay, although torn spinnakers and jibs and a broken rudder were some of the casualties among the capsized boats.

The fleet pushed the start line hard for the first start, resulting in a general recall. Second time away Darren Roach / Jeremy Stevens judged things the best and went off into the lead, as well as being the first to take the crucial tack towards the big waves on the right hand side of the course. Fergus Barnham / Serena De Nahik followed them around the first buoy, and then demonstrated why they are last years National Champion's by powering down the run a bit quicker. The large waves gave some tricky beating conditions (trying to prevent the waves breaking over the bow), and some awkward tacks if you couldn't pick the correct time. But down-wind, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the powered up conditions and superb surfing that was available. Third was the over-night leader Jasper / Laura Barnham.

A long wait was then required before the second race could be started, while the rest of the fleet flew, or struggled if they got the gybe angles just wrong, down the last run. Where the first race start was slightly Committee Boat biased, this start was pin-end biased. Darren Roach / Jeremy Stevens judged it perfectly to power off from the pin - while one of the boats towards the committee boat over luffed in the waves and ended up tacked onto port and stopped with about 20 seconds to go! Fergus / Serena were determined to not let Darren / Jeremy out of their sights - and watching the close cover tacking on the second beat that was going on in the 20+ knot wind and big waves was very impressive. Jasper / Laura continued their great form with another 3rd closely chased by Rob / Sarah Burridge who finished the day with two 4ths.

">Watching the racing live or in re-play is possible with all the boats carrying SailRacer GPS trackers.
