Zhik UK 29er National Championship at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Day 5

by Paul Hammett, Hatty Ward & Tom Darling 12 Aug 2016 09:45 BST 6-12 August 2016

The star turn of the day at the Zhik 29er UK Nationals at Royal Torbay Yacht Club came from PRO Stuart Childerley who with his team put 5 races in each for Gold and Silver before 3:30pm to get the Championships back on track.

The sun came out and while there were wind direction and pressure changes, that led to various course changes, the fleet enjoyed champagne conditions with 12-17 knots all day.

In the Gold fleet Crispin Beaumont and Tom Darling have built a very strong position with 1,7,8,1,3 and lead by 10 points from Nick Robins and Billy Venis-Ozanne who posted 18,1,13,2,5. However, net points masks the dominance of Beaumont/Darling who were one of only 3 boats to score top 10 in every race. With 7 of the top 10 carrying large discards much will depend on the way the sailors handle the expected lighter conditions tomorrow as well as whether the PRO can get enough races in to get the second discard. On the evidence of today he will give it a shot. Local sailors Ollie Aldridge and James Jobson lie 3rd after 5,6,1,17,1. In the other categories Hannah Bristow and EMily Covell are top girls in 7th while Henry Jameson and Harry Jones top Juniors in 28th. In the keenly contested mixed category Ellie Walton and Dan Budden hold the lead in 13th.

Silver fleet also completed 5 races but had to be dispatched by the PRO to the naughty step and use of the black flag on a couple of occasions. Luke/Ewan Gribbin and Luke Robertson/Jacob Hutchings are locked together on 11 points after both pairs dominated racing in the fleet with consistent top 5 races to count. Arthur Brown and Hannah Tucker lie 3rd.

Three races are scheduled for Fancy Dress sailing day on Friday while the weather forecast seems unclear with an expectation of 6-12 knots. The Imperial Hotel will be hosting the black tie dinner for the competitors Friday night when the 2016 National Champion will be crowned.
