Zhik UK 29er National Championship at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Day 4

by Paul Hammett, Hatty Ward & Tom Darling 11 Aug 2016 10:00 BST 6-12 August 2016

The fleet and race committee had high hopes of 8-13 knots from the North West for the first day of Finals racing. However, this forecast was accurate only for the sail to the start and despite 4 hours waiting it just wouldn't stick. There were some starts and one lap but the window to fair racing wouldn't open.

The wind at various times was 140 - 330 and 2 to 13 knots but never for more than 10-15 minutes. AP over A eventually appeared and the cold and wet fleet came home.

This however gives some column inches to comment on the star turns from the karaoke evening that was run and arranged by the sailors. Though some songs were "murdered" there were some surprisingly good offerings.

Max Todd kicked the evening off with an emotional performance of 'Thinking out loud'. Star turns were noted by Paddy Keach who sang 'Naive' by the Cooks with Emma Barnett. Tom Darling sang quite a lot and his performances were described as "mesmerising". The whole fleet smashed "You're the one that I want" from Grease.

James Curtis starred in 'Rappers Delight' with Morgan Peach and Tommy Darling. Hatty and Eve had a few notable performances and Eve's closing 'Wonderwall' was stunning as the whole fleet joined in the chorus. A great time was had by all.

For Thursday 4 final races are scheduled though the Race Officer will try for 5. Varying forecasts suggest 13-19 knots from the North West. The first ever sailors forum tonight should end in time for an early night.
