Young British Girls' success at the Laser 4.7 Youth World Championships

by Ben Nicholls 8 Aug 2016 17:49 BST 1-7 August 2016

The 2016 Laser 4.7 World Championships are now complete. Nearly 400 exhausted young sailors depart Kiel on Sunday evening after a long Championship which threw all weather conditions at the sailors.

21 sailors represented Team GBR and it was very young team compared to many of the other 40 nations competing. Despite their young ages, some respectable results were achieved by both the boys in their huge fleet of sailors and the girls who dominated the U16 category with 4 in the top 10 and 7 in the top 20.

Matilda Nicholls, fresh from her European Championship success in France also secured a podium finish in the Girls U16 at the World's and was the leading GBR girl, Alex Schonrock, Eleanor Poole and Freya Cumpsty also ended the week strongly. A special mention should go to 13 year old Abby Childerley who secured a spot in the Gold Fleet for the finals after putting together a very consistent series in the qualifying round.

The Boys faced a stern challenge from a large fleet of sailors from 40 countries. It was Christopher Jones who lead the GBR Boys, hotly pursued by Arthur Fry. Special mention should go to William Rowland who turns 13 this year, 2 broken masts could not remove the smile from his face throughout the week and what a fun week he had!
