RS Tera Southern Championships at Hayling Island Sailing Club

by Emily Davis 22 Jul 2016 13:03 BST 16-17 July 2016

Glorious sunshine and a steady breeze greeted those who travelled to Hayling for the Southern Championships last weekend. After a briefing on safety and the course all were itching to go for the 1200 first start, joining the 29er fleet out in Hayling Bay. A good F4 with some great waves made for super sailing conditions and the locals were quick to make use of their knowledge of the tidal race. 3 races down and fresh (if slightly pink) happy faces came ashore exhilarated by the conditions, with the overnight leaders Robbie McDonald (HISC) in the sports and Will Caiger (Bough Beech) for the Pro Fleet.

A spectacular evening was enjoyed by all to be followed with yet another beautiful morning albeit slightly less wind. In light of this the decision was made to carry out the days racing in Chichester Harbour, which provided more entertainment for the onshore supporters than the previous day and HISC's viewing balcony was well attended. The more protected waters and fewer waves led to a change in fortunes of some of the pond sailors in the sport fleet, but it was not enough to move Robbie off the top spot. Second place went down to the wire with Fergus Pye (Draycote) taking it on countback from Ralph Nevile (Frensham Pond). A tough battle in the Pro Fleet between Will and Harrison Pye (Draycote) ensued but once again Will managed to hold his position to take the title, local sailor Billy Mitchell enjoying third place.

A brilliant event, turning out to be super last-minute practice for those going to Spain for the World Championships, with the sunny conditions ensuring lessons were learnt (the hard way for some!) regarding suncream. Thanks to HISC and we look forward to returning there next year!
