6 Metre European Championship at Brunnen, Switzerland - Day 2

by Fiona Brown 18 Jul 2016 12:08 BST 14-19 July 2016

On the second day of the International 6 Metre Europeans 2016 on Switzerland's Lake Lucerne, the Swiss Yacht Junior managed to defend her lead in the Moderns category, whilst in the Classics division the leader is still Llanoria.

In bright sunlight and changing winds of up to 12 knots the 31 competing teams enjoyed two great races, races three and four of the eight race series. Swiss Yacht Junior with Skipper Jean Luc Monnard at the helm scored a first and a second place and now has an eleven point lead over his nearest rival.

The US boat Sting, with Russ Silvestri at the helm, made a big jump forward today thanks to a second and a fifth place to move up into second overall, while Paul Smith's Valhalla had another very steady day with a fifth and fourth to now sit in third place, three points behind Sting.

Race four was won by Norbert Stadler's Courage IX, who moves up into fifth place overall, three points behind fourth placed Beat Furrer sailing Temptation 3 who had a tricky start to the day with a thirteenth place, his worst result of the series, but went on to take a third in race four.

In the Classics category the leader in the preliminary standings remains unchanged as well. With a first and a fifth place US yacht Llonaria with Eric Jesperen at the helm managed to defend his position by the narrowest of margins. He shares 9 points total with Nada skippered by Poul Richard Hoj-Jensen, who scored a fourth and first place and takes second only on count-back. Completing the Classics top three after two days is Andreas Haubold's Lillevi whose very consistent second and third puts him eight points behind the overall leaders.

The championship continues until Tuesday with up to eight races scheduled. Five races are required to constitute a championship. When fewer than six races have been sailed all her races will be counted, if 6 or 7 races have been sailed she will discard her worst score, and if 8 races are sailed she will discard her worst two scores.
