Powering to victory (report from Nigel Walbank
Competitors for the second of the Wildwind Holidays sponsored Wednesday Summer series enjoyed a sunny summers evenings racing and turned out in large numbers particularly in the Class 2 fleet with 31 starters.
The NNW wind meant a running start from the club line with lots of gybing down the river for the exclusively asymmetric spinnakered Class 1 fleet. Of the 8 RS400s competing it was Rob and Jan Martin who led out of the river by making the best use of the shifts and gusts in the wind but once out in the Solent with the breeze freshening and on flat water the skiff classes were then able to stretch their legs for two circuits out to Berthon buoy and back to the river entrance. Once handicaps were applied the RS800 of Luke and Emma McEwen won from Nigel Walbank's Musto Skiff and Giles Chipperfield's D1, fresh from his 3rd place in the D1 National championships at Torbay. In the RS400 the Martins were overtaken by Kevin Podger and Heather Chipperfield as well as John Cooper crewed by Becci Wigley to take the next three places.
Class 2 consisted of a very mixed fleet of single handed, and two man symmetric, asymmetric and none spinnaker boats. The asymmetric single handed RS100 of Matt Thomas led on the water at the end of the first run but it was another asymmetric, Club Vision Number Three, with Lee Todd and Charlotte Gwyther, taking handicap honours from the Laser Radial of Robbie Boyd and the Aero 7 of David Ellis. The non-spinnaker Taser of Richard Russell and Sylvia Weger gained fourth place from the symmetrical spinnakered Wayfarer of John Silvers and Oliver Dunne.
Class 3 was exclusively made up of single handed Lymington Scows with Tim Power powering away to a two and half minute win from Pete Wills and John Sims.
Report from Alex Barnes
Lymington Town Sailing Club celebrated its 70th anniversary this past weekend before racing resumed on Wednesday evening.
The Wildwind Wednesday Summer Points series continued with it's second race this week.
An average wind speed of between 10 and 12 knots kept the crews moving at a decent pace.
The fast fleet started first as usual but the medium and slow fleets were combined after the medium start was delayed by the ferry.
Those sailors out on the water were treated to lovely sunny conditions in the late evening but the crew of Luke and Emma McEwen enjoyed them the most, taking the line honours after an hour of racing.
A novice series is currently being run by the club for those sailors who are new to racing. For further details, please contact the sailing secretary on 01590 674514.
