Hamble River Wednesday Night Series - Series A race 5

by Kathy Smalley 13 Jun 2016 12:22 BST 8 June 2016

Summer finally arrived for Race 5 of the Hamble River Sailing Club A Series. The shorts were out, the skies were blue - what more could the sailors ask for? Well a bit of water would have helped as with low water at the start time the marks to be used were rather limited.

All classes set off on a reach to deeper water, a run and a beat, then a fetch home. The wind was light, and forecast to drop, and it was definitely an evening for the lighter boats. In class 3 Cockleshell turned out for the first time, showed the fleet a clean pair of heels and won her class. The 6 boats in the XOD class changed position throughout the race, but it was the class captain on Calypso who was first home.

The weather was perfect for Midnight Cowboy in class 1 who finished 18 minutes ahead of her competitor, and new boat Ariel came in second. The largest fleet is class 2 with 10 boats; M'Enfin?!, a little Corby 25 got away from the pack and was able to look back at the fleet in the distance. She finished 10 minutes ahead of Needlework and the pack of Impalas.
