You can sail 'Swallow' in Norfolk or Suffolk during 2016

by Sail Ransome 19 Jun 2016 09:28 BST 19 June 2016

'Swallow' is the star of the 1974 film Swallows and Amazons adapted from Arthur Ransome's book. She was hidden in a boat shed after filming, but was restored in 2010 thanks to the donations of hundreds of fans. She is available for you to sail, just like in the books, anywhere in England.

The new film

This year there is a new Swallows and Amazons film out, made for a modern audience in conjunction with the BBC. Again they have used classic lugsail dinghies, trying to stay faithful to the original details in Ransome's books. You may spot a few famous faces in the trailer...

The old boat

If you would like to go sailing in the Swallows and Amazons style, no matter which of the various books or films you preferred best, this year we can offer you the delights of the Norfolk Broads, the Suffolk rivers, or even a North Essex archipelago (code name 'Secret Water'). 'Swallow' will be based in East Anglia for all the 2016 season.

You do not need any experience; we just want to get as many people as possible interested in sailing. There are long and short trips available, even races to take part in. We just for a donation to our funds (to cover insurance/varnishing) if you get afloat.

The calendar of events is starting to fill up but you can contact us about any free days, and we will get you sailing provided we can find a volunteer skipper who is free.

Find out more at www.sailransome.org (Sail Ransome is the non-profit association which looks after Swallow) or email to ask a question or sign up for the occasional newsletter.
