Annual Regatta at East Lothian Yacht Club

by Derek Braid 6 Jun 2016 19:55 BST 4-5 June 2016

Over the weekend 4th and 5th June 2016, East Lothian Yacht Club at North Berwick held their annual open regatta, which attracted a total of 102 sailing dinghies. There were 83 visiting dinghies from all over the country together with 19 dinghies from the home club.

The weather was ideal with brisk but steady north east winds on both days, with a significant swell, particularly on the Saturday. The racing courses were split into two courses, to the east and the west of Craigleith, with the asymmetric dinghies racing on the east course.

Three races were held on Saturday and two races on Sunday. It was a magnificent sight to see so many dinghies sailing out from North Berwick's West Bay each day, and returning 3 hours later.

There were a number of capsizes but with plenty safety boats in attendance there were no problems. All age groups were represented from teenagers to sailors in their sixties. At the prizegiving, the East Lothian Yacht Club Commodore, Robbie Lawson, thanked the competitors for the way they had conducted themselves, and thanked the army of volunteers from East Lothian Yacht Club who had made the event such a success.

The club is hosting the Topper National Championships from 7 to 12 August 2016 when over 200 Toppers are expected to attend.

The winners of the each sailing dinghy class are as follows:

  • 29er – Hamish Taylor and Rory Rose from Clyde Cruising Club
  • RS Feva – Tom Storey and Jamie Rastrick from Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club
  • General Handicap – Lyndsay Doig and Laura Sandison from East Lothian Yacht Club sailing a 2000
  • Laser – Peter Malcolm from Largo Bay Sailing Club
