Allen Solo Thames Valley travellers at King George Sailing Club

by Jeremy Nicholson 6 Jun 2016 19:09 BST 4 June 2016

The Solo fleet descended on King George sailing club on Saturday 4th June for the Allen sponsored open meeting, part of the Thames Valley travellers series.

The fleet where greeted by a Northerly wind of 7 to 8 knots for race 1. The start got away first time and Steve Ede led a group from the right, who looked to be ahead of Alex Corby, who was leading the left hand pack. Vince Horey managed to get the last two shifts correct coming into the windward first from Alan Bishop and Steve Ede. These three boats extended from the rest of the fleet to finish in that order.

Race 2 and Godfrey Clark had now joined the fleet, after spending all of the first race changing his main halyard. After a recall and the introduction of the Black Flag race 2 got away with Vince Horey again leading at the first mark from Alan Bishop and Steve Corby.

Horey maintained the lead until the last beat when the boats behind split and, opting to stay with the pack, let Bishop go to left and slip through to win the race from Horey and Alex Corby.

With Horey and Bishop both on 3 points it was between these two boats for the meeting going into the last race. The fleet got away first time and it was Horey who rounded the windward mark first again from Colin Goodman and Tim Lewis in third. Alex Corby managed to slip into the lead on the next beat and stay there for a lap.

On the final beat Horey needed to pass Corby for the win and the meeting. Whilst Horey managed this Goodman, Bishop and Lewis went left and passed both of them. Colin Goodman in his first Solo event held his nerve and took the win from Bishop and Lewis. This result was enough for Bishop to take the event.

Results:

1. Alan Bishop 5646 3 points
2. Vince Horey 5670 3 points
3. Alex Corby 5234 7 points
4. Steve Ede 5608 7 points
5. Tim Lewis 5516 9 points
6. Colin Goodman 5324 10 points
