YANMAR Moth World Championships at Hayama, Japan - Day 2

by Tomoko Nishi 25 May 2016 10:06 BST 23-29 May 2016

Chris Rashley has moved into the lead in the YANMAR Moth World Championships at Hayama, Japan. Super-consistent Paul Goodison remains in second place which a retirement and DNC for Robert Greenhalgh due to a broken shroud has seen him drop down the field.

Today's sailing conditions were a strong southerly wind in the morning which was not ideal for the less experienced sailors to handle a Moth. Therefore about 20 participants, mainly those who are not confident about sailing in this weather didn't join today's races. However, many of them rode on safety boats to support the competition. They could have a close look at top sailors' racing and learn a lot.

Chris Rashley from the UK, a new generation of sailor, got ahead of others and finished in first place today. Paul Goodison, 2008 Beijing Olympic gold medallist in the Laser Class, was consistent again and remains in second place. Next overall is Australia's Scott Babbage who is third overall after today's races.

Among the Japanese participants, currently Kohei Kajimoto is leading in seventh. Kajimoto, the reigning Japanese Champion keeps his momentum in the championships.

"I usually sail in high waves and strong winds for training. So I look forward to tomorrow's races", said Kajimoto confidently.

Japan's Hiroki Goto who is aiming to finish within top 10 in the championships is currently in eleventh. Hayama is Goto's hometown, so we could well see a fight back from him.

69 sailors from 10 countries are participating in the championships. 33 participants are from the host nation, Japan, 17 from Australia and 10 from Great Britain. Also 3 sailors are from Argentina.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is similar to today and it will advantage the skilled sailors. Another three races are scheduled.

Results after Day 2: (six races, 1 discard)
