Island Sailing Club Evening Race Series - Day 1

52 boats turning out for the first race meant that the 2016 Evening Race Series got off to a brilliant start 'without a bang' as the new protocols for starting were used for the first time.
There was no wind at 1730hrs and a strong flood tide but Race Officer Richard Palmer held his nerve and didn't abandon the racing. The wind duly arrived at 18.15 and the starting sequence began on time.
Short courses with two rounds were the order of the day for all classes with Chris Preston, Nick Spence, Barry Byham, Martin Moore and Gil McCutcheon all taking the first wins of the season.
The sunshine and light breeze made a fantastic start to the series. All boats completed the courses with one or two spotting the back eddy created by the new breakwater and using it to great effect.
Courses were successfully sent using the new text message system, backed up by VHF Radio, now that the old roof top course boards have gone. The Sonars were shuffled ready for next week, but where were the five X One Designs that had entered the series? Perhaps we'll see them next week...
