This meeting was by invitation sent to local clubs in the Thames Valley area, who were interested in a day's sail with a friendly, not a highly competitive fleet.

Fourteen entrants arrived from nine clubs to be greeted with light winds and unfortunately scattered rain showers including a short burst of sleet. A course consisting of a figure of eight and a sausage took the fleet about 10 minutes from a single start to complete each race. Those who started mid way down the line had the advantage of not getting caught up with the melee at the starboard end. The finish line was relaid to prevent a hook finish when the wind varied. The fleet had difficulties rounding the windward mark (3) as it was the furtherest away from the control area and the wind died at that point. Also when rounding the lower mark (4) of the figure of eight, the fleet realised it was running through the remainder of the feet beating to the mark.

They soon learnt to sail away from the beating boats to minimise collisions. The wind always varied in direction and strength, which tested the helm's abilities, especially when a squall came through one of the beats, causing some uncontrollable antics. The competitors sailed in a friendly atmosphere and were very well behaved with the novices.

John Shorrock (Reading S C) found his groove in the afternoon by winning by one point from David Adams (Woking), followed by Hugh McAdoo (Guildford). Nick Royse (Frensham Pond) gained fourth place with his own designed wooden boat.

The Race Officer Chris Hay was ably assisted by Bryan Verran and John Evans (results), Lionel Corper and Ron Killestein (mark laying).

In conclusion, it was thought the format was successful and other clubs would consider hosting a similar event.
