Yorkshire and Humberside Youth Sailing Association at Beaver Sailing Club

by Chris Cooper 17 Apr 2016 21:14 BST 16 April 2016

Saturday 16th April saw Yorkshire and Humberside Youth Sailing Association arrive at Beaver Sailing Club for the first event of the 2016 series.

The wind had promised to blow and upon arriving at the club it looked a little calmer than expected, however once out on the water and away from the lee of the clubhouse the competitors realised it was a nice day for a great sail. As race 1 got underway Jenni Parsons took an early lead, rounding the first mark in her Laser Radial just ahead of James Tulley in his Laser Standard with Oliver Kent and Ellie Clark in hot pursuit in their RS Feva. Jenni managed to keep James at bay for a couple of laps before he overtook her. Unfortunately for James, he wasn't able to pull away enough and Jenni managed to pip him to first place on handicap, James coming in Second and Hugh Blyth, who'd been battling away in his Optimist came in to take 3rd place.

Race 2, after a re-start, saw the wind starting to freshen a little and some brave sailing, especially from within the RS Tera fleet with Holly and Tilda keeping each other company. Another close battle was ensuing at the front between James and Jenni and this time James took the honours, with Jenni coming second and the Feva team of Ollie and Ellie taking the 3rd spot.

It was all to play for in Race 3 and James really had the bit between his teeth as he pulled out a sizeable lead, helped by picking some great tacks in the freshening and shifting wind. He held on to take the final gun in first place, with Jenni coming in second, closely followed by Ollie and Ellie in the Feva would entertained the onshore crowd with some great kite handling.

Everyone came off the water fresh faced and tired but having enjoyed a great days sailing and looking forward to the next event at Yorkshire Dales SC on Saturday 23rd April
