Race Saving Ideas
The P&B Race Team have been getting back out on the water over the last few weeks, well a few of the hardy ones never really stopped but with the sailing season really starting in earnest we thought now was a good time to remind you of a few basics:
Preparation is the key to prevent poor performance, feeling confidence in your boat preparation is vital, so leave plenty of time for it. Even the best prepared can sometimes get caught out, though especially in the more complex classes with many onboard systems.
Carry a few spares, we don’t recommend carry your whole toolkit (remember to keep the weight down, especially if like us, you are carrying a bit of personal weight after the winter!) but it is amazing what you can fix with a multi-tool and just a few bits & pieces. And that could save you the race. Here at P&B we have come up with a list of must-have bits for on-the-water maintenance. We always carry the following in our buoyancy aid or hatch bag.
Split rings Electric Tape, Multi-tool & knife, Shackles, Block, Rope
Hatch bags are a really useful addition to any boat; they allow enough room for a spray top and hat to be carried without them getting wet and heavy!
P&B Workshop
The cold moulded Flying Fifteen Peter has been working on is now back to its former glory, her waterlines painted in a lovely chilly red to complement the wooden veneer finish. Peter has just finished polishing up the hull ready for her owner to collect once we have lined up and fitted the keel.
Your dinghy may not require quite as much work as this F15 but on-the-water performance can still be improved by removing hull dings and foil scratches along with a thorough polish. With many top teams taking advantage of our in-house services why not give us a call this week to discuss the services available?
We currently have three unusual occupants in the workshop, high specification racing sculls in for some much needed attention. The three brand new hulls have been imported from China in non-breathable bags, and as a result the hull & deck finish have developed osmosis. This is another reason why P&B recommends woven breathable fabric for covers; we offer a bespoke service to fit any deck and hull shape.
Saturday Assistant
Pinnell & Bax, Northampton based sailmakers, are looking for a new Retail Assistant to work in the Northampton shop. Giving good service on every day of the week is essential to our Customers. Saturday’s are often our busiest day of the week and this role is key to the success of P&B’s retail business. This is a great way to start in the marine industry or a career in sailing, many of our previous Saturday staff have gone on to full-time careers in P&B or other marine companies.
Sailmaker
Finally, we are looking for a new member to join the P&B loft team; we are recruiting for a trainee or experienced sailmaker to work alongside some of the industry’s most experienced figures. This is a unique opportunity to either learn the skills involved in sail-making or improve your skills and contribute to our championship winning products. As part of the loft team you will also become part of the P&B Race Team, and receive employee discounts on sailing related products from the store, both hardware and clothing.
