JPWatersports RS200 Scottish Tour Round 1 at Largs Sailing Club

by Robbie Burns 13 Apr 2016 13:43 BST 9-10 April 2016

Largs training and sprints weekend

The first event of 2016 for the Scottish RS200 circuit was held at Largs on 9-10 April. The format was a day's training followed by sprint races on Sunday. The event was well attended with 17 boats, 34 sailors.

Saturday's training was held in a southerly 8-12 knots, with bright sunshine the order of the day. A long upwind and downwind session gave sailors the opportunity to work on tacking/gybing and boat speed before lunch.

After lunch starting practice followed by a race got everyone ready for Sunday's racing. After a short postponement to allow the easterly wind to fill in, sailors launched and headed out to the race track. With the wind varying from 5 - 12 knots with 90 degree wind shifts, sailing became more akin to a game of snakes and ladders.

Priorities of the day were starting cleanly, allowing the option of staying on the lifted tack and sailing towards any gusts coming down the course. It was a particularly challenging wind direction with many lulls stopping boat's progress both upwind and down.

Seven races were completed during which the course was relayed a number of times as the wind swung from north east to south east in the Largs channel.

Consistency was the order of the day and first and second places were a closely fought battle with Robbie Burns and Vicky Simpson taking the event win ahead of Roger Carter and Rachael Cooke. Four points separated third to fifth places with local sailors Martin Faulkner and Bill Forsyth taking the last of the prizes. Stuart Teasdale and Ashly Martin unfortunately missed out on 3rd due to a sailing the wrong side of a mark approaching the finish. This caught out a number of sailors including overall winner in race 1.

Port Edgar will host round 2 of the tour on the 14-15 May 2016. With a few new faces and series participants having the chance to win a brand new jib, we will likely see a great turn out at the next JP Watersports RS200 Scotland tour 2016 events.
