Henri Lloyd, the world renowned market leader in technical sailing gear and premium lifestyle clothing, have joined the Land Rover BAR Academy – the project to create a sustainable talen @HenriLloyd63 @hlmarine @GC32Racing @extremesailing #exsst programme in sailing. This new initiative seeks out and supports talented young British sailors to create a pathway into the America's Cup.
Henri Lloyd will join as Official Clothing Partner, broadening their relationship with the British Challenger for the 35th America's Cup; Henri Lloyd are already a Technical Supplier to Land Rover BAR.
Henri Lloyd's Joint CEO, Paul Strzelecki commented, "It's critical for the future of our sport that we give young sailors a chance to compete at the highest level, so we are really pleased to be able to support the Land Rover BAR Academy team and the next era of talented young British sailors."
The immediate goal for the Academy is to select a British team to compete in the Red Bull Youth America's Cup (RBYAC) in 2017. This series will be raced in the same AC45F that the senior teams use for the Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series, and will be fought out during the 35th America's Cup in Bermuda in June 2017.
The first intake into the Land Rover BAR Academy will be chosen from an on-going selection policy, and will compete in the Extreme Sailing Series 2016. Twelve sailors will be selected to join the Academy and will have all their regatta costs paid for, with access to the expertise and facilities at the home of Land Rover BAR, including workshops with the senior sailing team.
The mentoring and support team will include Land Rover BAR Sailing Team Manager and three times America's Cup winner Jonathan 'Jono' Macbeth, and Land Rover BAR sailor and three-time winner of the Series, Leigh McMillan. The project manager will be Rob Andrews, London 2012 Olympic Sailing/Venue Manager, and a former RYA Olympic coach. The new Academy's coach will be Andrew Walsh, a former Extreme Sailing Series and Olympic multihull sailor and coach.
Jono Macbeth commented, "It's vital that we don't leave the future of young sailors to chance, and provide a proper pathway into the professional sport. So we are really pleased to have Henri Lloyd's support for the Academy. They have worked closely with our sailing team already, and we are developing some great kit that these young sailors will benefit from."
