Team New Zealand led by Leonard Fry undefeated after 45 flights

Day one of the Musto International Youth Match Racing Championship at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia has produced a competitive day for all 12 crews vying for championship glory.

Leonard Fry impressed with his crew of Logan Andresen, Josh Wijohn and Matthew Hughes from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron finishing the day undefeated.

"We had some really tricky conditions out there today but we managed to work really well together, get some wins and finish up with no losses," Fry said.

"The wind was really shifty and hard to pick but you just had to make a call and do the best with the conditions."

Sailing with a relatively new team, Fry said his crew adapted really well to the Harbour conditions and the CYCA Elliott 7s.

"We have a fairly new crew so we spent a fair bit of today working out how everyone sails. I was here last year but this year is different with a new team and sails that are different to what we are used to in New Zealand."

Harry Price finished the day as the best placed CYCA representative dropping just the one match to Fry.

"It was a tough day out there and our match against Fry was just one of those flights that didn't go your way, we had a couple of penalties called against us and couldn't really come back from there," Price said.

"My crew were outstanding all day which was good especially in the conditions, apparently gusts got up to a bit over 20 knots so it was a good day to test everything out."

Price and his team pipped William Boulden from the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in Western Australia to finish second for the day after 45 flights.

Boulden and his crew had a solid day dropping only two flights mid-way through the day in their first appearance at the event.

Principal Race Officer, Denis Thompson said that all of the teams handled the conditions really well providing aggressive but fair racing throughout the day.

"We had a pretty good breeze all day coming from the north-east that freshened off later in the day," Thompson said.

The Musto International Youth Match Racing Championship will continue tomorrow with Fry eager to maintain his unbeaten run.
