The 2016 Supernova Nationals has now over 100 confirmed entries, meaning that 2016 will be yet another record breaking year for a class that truly is emerging into the spotlight of the UK dinghy racing scene.
After the 2015 Nationals back in June, I wrote a report about where the class was at the moment, and in that report I had mentioned that the re design of the boat and the social media spot light side of the class were the main tools in getting what was then an incredible 67 boats at our nationals. When Chris, the Chairman of the Committee, said his aim was to get 100 boats at the 2016 Nationals, I thought that it was a goal we could probably achieve with a lot of hard work from the committee and class members but overall, the objective was realistic when taking into account the increase of event numbers and also our entry into the Endeavour trophy.
What followed after the entry website went live surprised the committee and I think its fair to say, all of the class members. Over 40 boats signing up for the 2016 Nationals in the space of 24 hours was the first real indication that the 100 mark was becoming a very realistic objective. After the initial madness of the first 50 boats signing up, the list of entrants seemed to grow and grow as more sailors confirmed their places for what is promising to be a brilliant event and all the time the hope of 100 boats was turning into a reality which was a satisfying feeling for all who checked the entry list multiple times a day!
Reaching the 100 mark was a great moment for all Supernova sailors. We as a class set a goal and not only did we achieve it, we are on course to smash it.
One of the main reasons I know we achieved this remarkable figure is because of our members. New faces always seem to be appearing in the class and that wouldn't be happening if it wasn't for the hard work our members do to encourage new people.
The true racing spirit of the Supernova fleet is now really starting to get out there into the spotlight and I encourage anyone who would like to know more about the Supernova class to visit our class website at www.supernovadinghy.org
