Dyer Cup 2015 at Blackwater Sailing Club

by Oliver Southgate 13 Oct 2015 09:56 BST 11 October 2015

Around 60 boats turned up for this year's Dyer Cup, with 56 completing the course which is a traditional race run from committee boat at Osea Road up to Doctor and back through the river channel markers down to the end of Colliers reach at Maldon and back up to finish at the club line in Heybridge Basin.

This year the Fireballs showed up in numbers with 15 boats and a few visitors vying for the overall and class win. The all in start was pushed hard by the Fireballs to the line and in the end it was Dave Hall and Paul Constable took the class win in their Hyde Sails powered boat from Simon and Tom Maskell and joint 6th overall with the 49er of Gareth Davies and Rob Appleby.

A nine boat Cruiser fleet were trying to replicate last years cup dominance but lacked the speed required to claim overall victory this year with Joe Leary's Breezy coming home in 8th overall.

Sophie Johnson with crew Mattie Evans in their RS Feva won from the 10 other cadet teams taking part.

Overall it was the asymmetric skiff classes who dominated this year, with a 12-15 knot easterly breeze allowing them to get away and in clear air for the turn mark at doctor to hoist their kites for a rapid return to the top of the river.

Julian Wild and Ben Arnold led for the entire course in their 49er but it wasn't enough to escape the Musto Performance Skiffs of Jon Simpson and Dan Dixon who took 2nd and 1st place on corrected time after a close fought battle the entire race Dan pipped Jon at the very end with two other Mustos Andy Whittle and Mark Wild filling in 4th and 5th places.

A busy day ashore for the Macmillan bring and buy coffee morning was a great success raising money for charity.
