26-27 September 2015
Horning Sailing Club's Open Dinghy Weekend was sailed for over the weekend of 26/27th September, in a light breeze and Autumnal sunshine, which provided tricky sailing conditions.
Racing on Saturday afternoon saw extremely light winds on Hoveton Little Broad, but Sunday was the main event, combined with a Woodcock Salver meeting for Enterprises and a Bittern meeting. The Woodcock Salver attracted 8 entrants including a visitor from Dabchicks, the largest turnout on the Broads/Eastern area for such an event thus far this year.
Many of the boats were helmed or crewed by Horning's young sailors. In perhaps what is quite a rarity today, teams sailing included husband and wife, parent and child, cousins, siblings and friends.
Three wins from visitors Brian and Linda Cummings were enough to secure the Flirtatious Cup for helm and crew, ahead of Kevin and Pippa Edwards, who received three second places. The young teams of Edward Wildman and Sid Kemp, Ellie Edwards and Abi Holden, and Natalie Stiff and Martina Jurgiewicz all received a third place each. Adding to their two wins from Saturday, Ed and Sid picked up the Flying Enterprise and Cadet Trophy for their efforts (for Under 16 helm), whilst Ellie and Abi collected the newly re-awarded Broads Area Enterprise Trophy (for Under 19 helm), aptly presented by Ellie's father Kevin.
In the mixed Allcomers B fleet of Lasers, a Lightning and Wayfarer, it was worth the 400 mile round trip Jonas Osborn made to return from University in Bristol for the weekend to complete in his Laser, taking Onyx Barometer, Tino Trophy and newly presented Hannant Tankard after three wins. However, Kathryn Pettit sailing her Laser Radial did well to take the final race overall on handicap. In the Allcomers C fleet Thomas Wildman collected the Cadet Cup and Kingfisher Trophy. Five visiting Bitterns made the trip to Horning to compete for the Horning Bittern Trophy. After some closely fought competition this was won by Bruce Thompson.
