Sailors have a Topper time

One of the country's most popular youth sailing classes descended on the River Blackwater on Saturday 12th September to battle it out in a series of races put on by Marconi Sailing Club. The Open Meeting served as one of the Topper Class Traveller Events but also an RYA Zone Qualifier Event.

In total 22 entrants took part in the mini-series with Marconi putting on 4 races throughout the day with everybody kept on their toes thanks to a strong breeze. Wind over tide conditions saw the fleet battle it out in choppy waters with Euan Harris from Deben Yacht Club emerge victorious for the first two races. Arabella Sabberton from NBYC took first place in race three which took place in slightly calmer waters once the tide had turned in the afternoon. With Euan already having two wins under his belt, the winner was decided in race four. Arabella was the winner of the race, which after discards were taken in to account, meant she emerged as the overall winner. Marconi member Jason Clarke was awarded the Endeavour Trophy for having taken part in all 4 races during the event.

Marconi is fast becoming one of the beacon clubs on the East Coast for youth training following their enhanced status as an RYA Training Centre and Champion Club within the last year.

The club hopes that by regularly hosting large fleets, other class associations may look to choose Marconi and the fantastic sailing conditions on the River Blackwater in the future.
