RS Feva Eurocup Grand Final at Muiderzand Regatta Centre - Overall

by Frances Peters 21 Sep 2015 10:55 BST 19-20 September 2015

Another beautiful morning in Muiderzand greeted sailors on arrival this morning. A light breeze had filled in across the course and racing got underway on time.

It was Jack Lewis and Lucas Marshall of GBR that got off to a flying start, leading to the first mark and extending their lead as the race progressed. Meanwhile Jakub Dobry & Tereza Dobra (CZE) and Lizet de Vries & Jildou Gerritsen (NED) fought hard for 2nd. The pair could be heard shouting coming into the final leeward mark as the Dutch team luffed hard to secure themselves the inside lane out of the mark. It was the Czechs that eventually found a burst of speed to just shoot ahead for the finish.

As race 2 established, the breeze started to fizzle on the left and boats that had tacked early began to look strong but a left shift with a breeze increase at the top changed things and the group, led by Lucas and Marshall popped out in front. 4 boats rounded the windward mark at the same time, dodging each other as they hoisted and all vying for pole position to get themselves clear. Clear wind became ever more important as the breeze increased and stabilised; boat speed was king. De Vries & Gerritsen (NED) found their zone, leading Jip & Lot Groen to the finish but not catching the Brits, who had disappeared off on a 'horizon job'!

The wind built to around 15 knots for race 3, and the typical Markermeer chop built with it. A different kind of sailing was called for as sailors had to work their boats hard in the breeze and over the waves. Reverting to their battles of previous races, Jakub Dobry & Tereza Dobra from the Czech Republic chased Lewis & Marshall to the finish ahead of Ties van der Stroom and Floris Breuking of the Netherlands.

Two remaining races of the day saw little change at the front of the fleet. Lewis and Marshall grew ever more confident and continued their winning streak to the end, posting a perfect score for the day and after a difficult day yesterday managed to pull off the overall event win in style. After a stonking start to the regatta, Dobry & Dobra (CZE) managed to hold on to finish in 2nd overall, while de Vries & Gerritsen (NED) proved to be in their element in the breeze today and several top 3 results pushed them into 3rd place overall. Czech team, Jaroslav Cermak & Petr Kostal took 4th overall ahead of van der Stroom & Breuking (NED).

With 9 races over 2 days, a range of conditions and a friendly atmosphere, Holland has delivered and it's been a fabulous way to end the first ever RS Feva Eurocup series. Lewis and Marshall (GBR) were crowned Eurocup Champions. Behind them, the Czech battle has been evident from the start and after swapping positions throughout the series, Cermak & Kostal took silver ahead of teammates Dobry & Dobra and Barbora Pourova & Jiri Smrcka. 5th place was snatched by Lithuanian helm, Simonas Jersovas, who was crewed by both Kajus Oskutis and Vejas Strelciunas. 6th overall in the series and leading the dutch contingent was Mette Rijke and Merle Louvinge.
