International Canoe UK Nationals at Stone Sailing Club - Day 2

by Gareth Caldwell 5 Sep 2015 01:05 BST 3-6 September 2015

The ingredients for a challenging day on the water were delivered on the second day of the nationals... force 4, tide at its most fiercest, wind against tide, shallows to catch the unwary.

A swift run down to the starting area saw a slight delay in starting proceedings, and I would like to apologise for this delay, my capsizing on the start line and getting the mast stuck in the mud was NOT part of the strategic planning!

Two races were completed in the morning with a swift turn around between the races. The newcomers to the fleet all did themselves proud, and their steep learning curve is progressing well.

Tony Marston has obviously been studying Vol 2 of C Chandlers book, and showed a clean set of heels with a port tack flier to all the starboard boats in race 2.

Steve Bowen has been strategically planning for next years assault on the travellers trophy by booking himself on a speed awareness course next month... focus to be on keeping a clear overtaking lane. The fleet would like to thank the Essex police force for running this course.

The afternoon race was the traditional long distance race over 17 miles. The wind had abated a little, and a short beat was followed by a long reach to the baffel off Bradwell power station. A beat to Osea Island, round the island, and then a run to the finish provided the fleet with a variety of wind directions and sea states. Phil Allen led the fleet home, showing good downwind speed and intelligent gybing angles with his AC.

An excellent meal and a early night would be the agenda of choice for many of the sailors.
