Gill Harken Seamark Nunn Cadet Week at Waldringfield - Day 4

by Andrew Nunn 17 Aug 2015 12:03 BST 13-20 August 2015

The wind was not playing ball on day four of Waldringfield Cadet Week, and Race Officer Gordon Harris had no option but to postpone racing until after lunch. Despite warm sunshine early on a sea breeze failed to materialise, but there was just enough breeze by 1.30pm to get racing underway.

The light and fickle conditions proved a challenge for overall leaders Jamie & Bettine Harris after they lost a huge initial lead in race 9, to be overtaken by new helm Cara Bland & Ines Green in 9962 "Flying Scotsman". The race was eventually won by Ed Harris / Daisy Nunn in 8514 "Mostly Harmless" with Hattie & Hamish Collingridge in 9877 "No Regrets" 2nd and Jamie & Bee 3rd.

Race 10 started in similar light breeze but with the added challenge that the tide had started to ebb. Early leaders Erin Marks & Tyghe Brown in their new boat 9982 "Racing Stripes" got caught in a wind hole in the middle of the tide and were overtaken by 3 boats. The race was eventually won by Hattie & Hamish by a big margin, followed by Ellie Wootton / Kate White in 9876 "Zest" and Ed & Daisy 3rd.

In the Cadet Silver Fleet, two top-flight crews-turned new helms – namely Hazel Whittle (with crew Charlotte Leigh) and Faye Chatterton (with crew Natalie D'Enno) scored a 1st and 2nd each with louis Lappage / Max Robinson (Fishers Green SC) 3rd in Race 3 and James Russell / Tristan Whittle 3nd in Race 4.

The Laser Radials enjoyed some very close racing in the light conditions but again it was overall leader Tom Fenemore who scored a 1st in Race 9 with Daisy Collingridge 1st in Race 10.

Cadet Week ends today with the final points race, crews' race and the much coveted parents' Old Gaffers Race (minimum combined age of helm and crew 70 years). Many thanks again to event sponsors Gill, Harken UK and Seamark Nunn.
