2000 class Nationals at South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club - Day 4

by Chris Jordan 12 Aug 2015 22:48 BST 9–15 August 2015

Wednesday is normally a lay day at the 2000 National Championships, but this year at South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club we were three races down after too much and then too little wind on the previous two days.

The Race Officer (Malcolm Blackburn) made the perfect call that there would be no wind until late in the afternoon, so two races were planned for 4pm. All day and right up to launch time there wasn't enough to race, but by the time we started (after a general recall and a black flag!) there was a steady 12 knots from the North.

Fergus Barnham & Serena de Nahlik nailed the pin end of the slightly biased start line, and sailed smoothly over the awkward chop on the up-tide left side of the beat to lead by 50 yards around the first mark. Meanwhile Tim & Linda Hulley were sailing in clear wind on the right hand side of the course, and arrived in 3rd place at the first mark - so it was clear wind rather than playing the shifts that gave the best strategy.

Down the first run, Rob & Sarah Burridge had a tangle with their boat, and Matt & Clare Sargent had a tangle with another boat, leaving Simon Horsefield & Tom Bernal to take second place. Third place was being closely fought for, until Rachel Grayson / Katie Burridge took 3 places down the last run and finished 3rd.

The second race kept the black flag, resulting in a clean start first time. Once again Fergus Barnham & Serena de Nahlik nailed the pin end, while Rob & Sarah Burridge came off the middle of the line and chased them hard up the first beat.

With one run remaining, Rob & Sarah Burridge were well clear in the lead, with Rachel Grayson & Katie Burridge chasing them hard. Down the run, Rachael & Katie had halved the distance by the gybe point, and finished right on Rob's transom - but the fleet now had a new race winner, as Fergus & Serena finished in 3rd place.
