Optimist Ora Cup Ora at Lake Garda - Day 2

by Elena Giolai 9 Aug 2015 23:38 BST 9-10 August 2015

The Ora Cup Ora started only today, due to the lack of wind on Saturday afternoon. The event is an international optimist regatta organized by the Circolo Vela Arco, scheduled until Monday 10th August, which count at the start 261 sailors from 11 countries, including the exceptional presence of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates team.

After the stalemate of the first day it has been necessary for everybody to wake up at dawn in order to start at 8 with the north wind, which allowed the two juniors fleets to sail three good races with wind from 8 till 20 knots.

Among the first in its class there are the Italian team members Salvetta and Muccino, who will fight for the podium tomorrow. Tomorrow the juniors will be split into Gold and Silver for the finals. The best with three first places is the Hungarian Arthur De Jonghe, that leads the race in front of Tommaso Salvetta (Fraglia Vela Riva), who scored a 2-1-2. At only one point from Salvetta and third provisional is the Austrian Clodi, while the other Italian Ilan Muccino (CV Ravenna) is fourth at 6 points from the podium.

There are five different nations among the top ten positions, with the presence of Malta in fifth with Michael Amadori. From Germany comes the first female Theresa Steinlein, tenth absolute, followed closely by Chiara Benini Floriani (eleventh, Fraglia Vela Riva) and Giorgia Cingolani (fourteenth-Fraglia Vela Riva, also in the Italian team to the recent Continental Championships in Scotland).

Due to strong wind of early morning the younger cadets (9-11 years) took to the water later, when the wind was dropping. They were able to sail only one race, concluded by only 38 of the 120 registered competitors. In the afternoon, just like yesterday, the presence of thunderstorms around the Garda Trentino blocked the arrival of the usual thermal wind from the south and therefore the cadets have had no longer the opportunity to conduct further races during the day.

The winner of the only sailed race is Peter Chimini CV Gargnano, in front of the recent winner of the Touring Cup of Crotone Marco Gradoni (CN Fanese). Provisional third place for the Slovenian Daniel Cante. The first female Beatrice Sposato (CV Crotone) is eleventh absolute, in front of Giorgia Bonalana (Circolo Vela Torbole). It has been a difficult race for Agata Scalmazzi (Fraglia Vela Riva) usually among the first in the overall classification and twenty-second today occupies the third position among the girls.

Tomorrow, as today, the first warning signal is planned at 8 am with the junior fleet divided into two fleets "gold" and "silver" (the first 71 gold), while cadets - if the wind is not too strong in the morning, will have to try to recover some race in order to make the standings more truthful.

Great expectations for the traditional lottery offered by the Circolo Vela Arco - a real tradition of Ora Cup Ora - Meeting of Olives, which provides attractive prizes for all participants.
