GJW Direct Firefly Nationals at Restronguet - Overall

by Caroline Edwards 2 Aug 2015 19:02 BST 26-31 July 2015

After a serious match racing start in light airs Fursty Ferret (Hudson/Marston) put Kong (Lumby/Evans) to the back of the fleet. With a stunning start, Nigel Wakefield and Emily Sanderson took a convincing lead over the 90 minute race.

They were closely followed by Ed Smith with his daughter Sophie and Alex Davey with young son Thomas, showing their kids the feel of Cornish sunshine and the front of the fleet. Dave Ellis had been sailing with his step daughter Evie all week and showed their talent in the lighter breeze by finishing 4th.

Despite a valiant effort getting back to the front by Kong they couldn't reach the needed win and that secured Stuart Hudson and Hollie Marston as the 2015 GJW National Champions! Stuart received the Sir Richard Fairey points cup and Hollie the Colin Whittle Trophy.

Close second was local Restronguet boat, Kong, Ben Lumby and Liz Evans. Imperial Poona sailors Ben and Jenny Vines took third place and the Rothmans trophy for all races to count including the crews race win for Jenny.

Under 18 champions were Alex Baxter and Ben Niccol from West Oxford SC. They received the Restronguet Ovaloid presented by Tan Lumby with a lovely message from its original winner (sailing in Salcombe as it was presented!). Student winners were Harry Gilchrist and Adrian Peirce from Itchenor.

First ladies and also winner of the Marlow fleet (16th overall) went to Lucy Boreham and Rachel Crebbin from Chichester YC with close competition from Sophia and Alan Hulbert from Restronguet.

The well-deserved team trophy went to Restronguet with top boats scoring 2nd, 7th and 19th.

The GJW outstanding achievement award was presented to the Restronguet Veterans. Phil and Jillian Slater, Dawn and Peter Langdon and Guy English. It was for their amazing contribution to the club both on and off the water. Restronguet has a thriving Firefly fleet and all remain a real challenge to beat on the water.

Standing in glorious Cornish sunshine, prize giving finished off a great week of sailing, socials, Duckhams nominations, some broken students and fun had by all. Many thanks to all our sponsors GJW Direct, Rooster, Marlow ropes, Hyde sails and Versatile marine for their generous contributions.

Huge thanks to Patrick Clarke and the Restronguet club team for a great week.
