Over the weekend of 18/19 July Bassenthwaite SC hosted a Flying Fifteen Open, part of the Waples Wine Travellers series. Despite the somewhat lively forecast for the weekend, 15 boats entered with 7 visitors from as far afield as Scarborough and a contingent of 4 boats from Dovestones.

The first race on Saturday was postponed for an hour to allow wind to ease as forecast and this encouraged 11 boats to sail the two races. The overnight leader was Andy McKee/Rich Jones with two wins, followed by Steve Goacher with substitute crew, Mark Somerville, Bass SC Commodore.

As forecast, the winds eased a little on the Sunday, persuading more boats on to the water. Red flags were seen flying on at least 2 boats which resulted in one protest, not held as the offending boat subsequently retired. One boat was also seen performing a 720 pirouette near the leeward mark.

Andy McKee continued his dominance with a second and a first to win the event with a race to spare. Steve Goacher was a close second, winning 2 races on Sunday, and Simon Longstaff/Jon Denwood were first Bassenthwaite boat in third.

Prizes including several bottles of wine provided by Waples Wine were presented by the Commodore's wife, Kirstie Somerville.
