Sharps Doom Bar Merlin Week at Salcombe Yacht Club - Day 3

by Tim Fells 7 Jul 2015 21:19 BST 5-10 July 2015

The forecast for Tuesday was for a moderate Southwesterly building as the day progressed. There was a big swell rolling into the estuary and breaking surf on Mill Bay.

Blue v Green flights Course 1,4,2,6,5,7

With a slack tide the fleet lined up early and although the start was not recalled, there were a number of boats over. Tim Fells and Oli Wells sailed another excellent first beat to lead at Blackstone and extend a 200m lead as they ran through the town only to see their number on the board of death.

Olly Turner and Hamish Kilburn rounded second but then dismounted on a gybe, but recovered amazingly to be challenging in the leading bunch at Yalton. Paul and Julie Rayson were showing their knowledge of the estuary to take the lead with Matt Biggs and John Hackett battling with Dave Hayes and Jonny Ratcliffe.

By the time the leaders headed into The Bag, Matt and John had taken the lead and defended to the line with Sam and Megan Pascoe coming through to second and Jon Gorringe and Nikki bass staging a strong recovery to take third ahead of Olly and Hamish.

Red v Black flights Course 1,3,1,7,1,5

Conditions for the afternoon race were exactly what the spectators were after; a F5-6 SW and not a lot of water. Conditions down through the start/finish line were particularly tough with very strong gusts raking the course. A lot of the fleet seemed reluctant to leave the beach and quite a few failed to make it down to the start line before the one minute black flag limit. A key casualty was Monday's race winner Simon Potts who had 'fallen asleep' with crew Ally Martin on the beach and was 5 seconds late to the line.

The fleet got away cleanly and after a full on beat it was Tom Stewart and Phil Dalby who rounded Blackstone first only to ditch it on the bear away gybe. Taxi and Alex Warren rounded second and took the lead from Richard Whitworth and Sam Mottershead on the run back through the town.

The transit past the ferry was spectacular with multiple capsizes, some extraordinary saves and some demolished kit. Alan Warren lost his mast just off the club and in a scene from the Merlin archives was rescued by Spud Rowsell, who no doubt claimed salvage rights!

Taxi and Alex were looking totally in control but were caught by Chris Jennings and Pete Horn who blasted the second run and then benefited from their own gust to take the lead in the The Bag. Despite the challenging conditions, positions remained the same to the line with Chris and Pete becoming the sixth race winner in six races. Richard and Sam chased Taxi and Alex home in third. Tom and Phil recovered well from their early spill to take fourth ahead of Dave Winder and Pippa Taylor.

Only 21 boats completed the course, four masts and a number of rudders were lost and one boat ended up on the rocks. Quite a race!
