The fourth event of the Derbyshire Youth Sailing 2015 Series saw really close racing between the leading sailors with George Coles coming out on top. Tight on his heels were Toby Woodings and Daniel Wellbourn Hesp as the fresh breeze across the strikingly beautiful Torside Reservoir provided some really good and testing conditions at Glossop Sailing Club in the High Peak.

The ten single handed sailors attending the event enjoyed three really demanding races through the day and each race had a different winner. The first race saw the Optimist of Daniel Wellbourn Hesp from Carsington Sailing Club adding to his tally of series event race wins with two other Carsington sailors, George Coles, in second in his Laser Radial and Toby Woodings coming in third in his Laser Standard. The excellent catering from the club volunteers gave the sailors a boost of energy to head out for the second and third races after lunch.

It was a switch around at the front for the second race with Toby leading the fleet home and again George coming in second place, this time ahead of Daniel. With all three leading sailors on equal points after two races, it was the third race of the day where the outcome was decided. A tense battle ensued and this time George won the race followed by Toby and Daniel in that order. The third race order became the order for the overall event prizes only after countback between the top two sailors.

The leading Glossop sailor proved to be Josh Harbut in his Laser Standard coming a very close fifth overall with Glossop sailors David Doyle in another Laser Standard and Josh Appleton in a Topper also only split on count back in sixth and seventh. George Coles commented "It's brilliant when the racing is close and you know you need to do your very best to win an event in the last race. All the training I've had from being in the UK Junior Squad has really helped to take my sailing on to another level and both Toby and Dan really pressed me hard. Thanks to all the club volunteers for helping to make the event happen".

Melissa Wellbourn Hesp, Chair of DYS enthused, "We had such a warm welcome from the Glossop volunteers and really exciting racing conditions it was only fitting that the sailors provided the perfect nail biter results that kept us all on the edges of our sets. The privilege of watching these sailors pushing themselves to perform at their best is amazing. The setting was wonderful and we're really looking forward to coming back again next year for a repeat experience".

Derbyshire Youth Sailing events provide a great, fun opportunity for youth sailors from any of the ten sailing clubs in Derbyshire to compete together and learn from each other to take their racing sailing onto the next stages. Novice youth racers aged from 6 to 18 are welcome to come along and give it a go. Supportive coaching can be provided to those sailors at the back of the fleet to help keep them in reach of the rest and allow them to develop their skills. In time, the novices soon gain experience and will one day be challenging the front runners.
