by Icarus Sailing Media 29 May 2015 12:26 BST
Welcome to the stunning city of Istanbul and Turkey's most prestigious event, the Turkcell Platinum Bosphorus Cup 2015. Celebrating its 14th anniversary, this action packed event is renowned for superb racing and memorable apres-sail hospitality and fun.
Participation at the event grows year on year, and it is firmly established on the international sailing calendar. The growing attendance is testament to the event's popularity, with new teams from around the world join the long-established faces on the start-line.
Bosphorus always serves up challenging race conditions, which is inevitably the attraction. Iconic yachts, like the Volvo Ocean Race 70, are here in the mix. And, amongst the rock star sailors is Lionel Pean of France, skippering SFS Voile - the VOR70 that finished 3rd in the 2012 Volvo Ocean Race. Prominent in offshore yachting, Pean is himself a former Round the World Race winner and predictably installed amongst the likely winners.
Today's practice race featured moderate winds, with numerous shifts & gusts – setting the scene for the days ahead. As they look to secure top billing on the scoresheet when it really counts, the practice race is the perfect opportunity for teams to find their form, put teamwork to the test and familiarize with the racing area and rivals on the race track.
Racing here is tactically challenging. Analysing and using both the breeze and current is the key to success. Teams will need to showcase excellent communication skills & execute outstanding teamwork. Getting on the scoresheet early is important - it sets the tone and gives some margin of safety net.
Tomorrow the Turkcell Bosphorus Cup will kick off on Marmara Sea, featuring 1 coastal race for the Maxi's & IRC 4, and 2 windward leeward races for the IRC 0-1-2 & 3 divisions. Join us again for our next report.
