2015 Spring Regatta at Notts County Sailing Club

by David Eberlin 27 May 2015 07:59 BST 23-25 May 2015

The spring regatta got off to a excellent start with 100 people signed on to race and socialise and enjoy the bank holiday weekend. The regatta was sponsored by Pinnell and Bax, Morton Boats, Gill, Allen Brothers, HB Clark and Harken, and attracted over 100 participants, with over 65 different boats on the water.

The weather saw calm conditions with some sunshine on Saturday and overcast for the next two days with a little more wind occasionally providing planning conditions.

After a briefing racing got off to a slightly late start due to the shifting wind and calm conditions. It was a Race Officers nightmare as reaches became beats and runs became close reaches however it generally resolved itself as the same people came out in the lead. In the first fleet of the Commodores Cup fast fleet Richard Mason and John Rowell led all three races in a Fireball to win with a clean sheet they were followed by Martin Stott and Nichola Ogden in an RS 400. Meanwhile the slow fleet saw Pete Hardy win the first race in a laser with John and Joyce Henderson in thier Wayfarer winning the second race and Rebecca Ogden and Fred Mainwaring in an RS200 winning the final race giving them the overall lead in the slow fleet. The Junior fleet is going from strength to strength and saw Scarlett Desorgher win the first two races to take the series with William Thomas not far behind and Oscar Concannon third, all in Toppers.

After lunch each day the novice fleet took to the water along with juniors first was Richard Mason with his five-year-old daughter Samantha crewing, they won the first race and were third in the second race taking the new trophy presented by Ian Firth and Chris Holt. William Thomas was second and Scarlett Desorgher third.

The Spring Regatta would not be complete without its socials, the theme was tropical and there were plenty of loud shirts along with some tropical drinks. On Saturday and we had a magician along with a meal and on Sunday paella with a band. Sunday also saw a duck race raising over £230 for charity and during the weekend cakes from Sweet Success raised over £60 for Sale4Cancer.

The final race of each day was class racing. The flying 15 fleet won by Will Gardner and Nicki Theokritoft. The RS 400s saw Ross Ryan and Ollie Moore Ryan win by a small margin from Martin Stott and Nicola Ogden. The lasers with 13 entries saw Lawrence Logan win with two firsts and Luke Hardy second. The menagerie fleet was won by Alex Hughes and Tom Smith in a 420 with Richard and Sarah Mason in a Scorpion second. Finally the junior fleet saw a different winner with two firsts in William Thomas showing just how competitive the juniors are becoming.

Finally the organisers Ross Ryan, the Vice Commodore and Katherine Hinsliff-Smith sorted out the prizes and thanked the sponsors Pinnell and Bax, Morton Boats, Gill, Allen Brothers, HB Clark and Harken and helpers.
