Area overview
Across the UK the National Solo class open meeting circuit is well underway. Word from North of the wall is that the Scottish fleet is strengthening in anticipation of the forthcoming National and Nation's Cup, being held on the shores of North Berwick in Aug (1-7). Andy Hutchinson is on the pace and has the likes of David Sword and Kevan Gibb biting at his toes. South of the wall the strong Northern circuit is mustering it's troops and with Andy Tunnicliffe, Ian Hopwood, Innes Armstrong, Jonathon Swain and the phenomenon that is Steve Denison all claiming silverware it will take more than an SNP tidal wave to halt the North. The midland fleet, led by Nigel Davies, are a keen bunch and with Chris Brown always on the premises when the prizes are handed out will provide tough opposition. In the east it is Enterprise/505 legend Vince Horey, light weather specialist Godfrey Clark and the Maskell brothers who are showing the necessary pace. In the south it is Steve Ede, Steve Cockerill, Nick Bonner and a very keen fleet at Portchester who are showing winning form. The National Solo provides a great platform for one design singlehanded racing, inland or offshore, while the flexibility in hull design, rig, and control systems give the sailor plenty to think about when looking for that extra ounce/gram of speed.
Big Weekend
The North Sails Super Series continues this weekend (May 23-24) with two events taking place. The Rooster Southern Area Championship and Act 3 of the Super Series takes place at Bough Beech S.C. on Saturday. There were well over 40 Solos at last year's event and with a nice 10-12 mph from the north east predicted, a new record could be reached. Nick Marden is the go-to-man on 07708 460624
Act 4
300 miles north west is the idyllic town of Abersoch and the team at South Caernarvonshire Y.C. are primed and ready to provide two great days of racing for the Welsh Sea Championship. Abersoch are no strangers to the Solo fleet as the venue is very well liked. The towns proximity to the club and race area is a winning recipe for producing a great championship and the nearby complex at Pwllheli, while no doubt an amazing complex will find it hard to match the endearing nature of Abersoch. The Northern/Scottish and welsh fleets will meet over two days (May 23-24) with 6 races scheduled, all for £25, that is great value.
Brian Holland is the contact and driving force, 07899 951596 . You will need to check out when you can access the beach, once there, the launching is fabulous
The question is, which event will get the most entries? Look out for the reports over the next few days.
