The St Edmundsbury Sailing & Canoeing Association's 'Antigua Sailing Day Regatta' will be held on Sunday, 26 April 2015 at Lackford Lake, 5 miles NW of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
The Regatta was initiated three years ago as a fun event to celebrate and coincide with Antigua Sailing Week in the Caribbean. Amazingly, through the wonders of the internet, reports of the Regatta came to the attention of the Antigua Sailing Week Race Committee and the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority, who were so impressed with the initiative that they kindly offered to come on-board with SESCA as event sponsors.
Last year, in an attempt to make the most of our good fortune, we made a concerted effort to turn the event into something more than a normal club race day. The result was a fantastic turnout of an unprecedented seventeen Laser dinghies; a fabulous day's racing; great entertainment - in the form of a three piece steel band - and a fun, party atmosphere, no doubt helped by the liberal provision of English Harbour Rum punch.
The Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Board were delighted with the turn out and ensuing publicity and, as a result, are generously continuing their sponsorship of the Regatta this year.
In the hope of making the event even bigger, better and more inclusive than before, we are opening this year's Regatta to Lasers, Toppers and a handicap division (dinghies up to 14 feet) and all age ranges. Over twenty dinghies are already entered, including a strong contingent from the Newmarket & Mildenhall Sea Cadets.
Racing starts at 10.30am with the steel band playing at lunch time and after racing.
Visitors and spectators welcome (no dogs allowed on site as the Club is in a nature reserve).
