Sani Resort is delighted to announce the first ever Sani Cup, an international sailing event featuring some of the best-known Greek and European sailors from 1st – 3rd May 2015 at Sani Resort's Marina. Guests at Sani over this May bank holiday period will be able to enjoy a sailing spectacle like never before, along the lines of Cowes week and other high-end sailing regattas.

The Sani Cup will host a Match Racing series; a one-to-one race of speed between identical, one-design boats. Whichever boat crosses the finish line first is deemed the winner. A Match Race has special rules that differ in some respects to those of conventional competitive fleet racing. Umpires continually follow the racing boats at a close distance to call and impose penalties in case of direct and instantaneous fouls. Every match lasts approximately 20 minutes and therefore all teams compete against each other in rotation. With identical boats and weather conditions applying for all competitors, with a small and narrow race course only 100m offshore, with many buoys and, most of all, extremely strict rules, there is no denying that a Match Race winner is truly a first-class sailor.

For this year, The Sani Cup – HMRT 2015 has been jointly organised by Sani Resort and Icarus Sailing Media, the agency responsible for organising the Hellenic Match Racing Tour. The one off sailing event aspires to be a milestone development in Greek and international sailing, bringing together distinguished teams and world champion athletes, and many other significant, top calibre, world-class competitors.

During those three days of intense Match Racing, as one might call it, more than 120 matches will be featured and the competing teams will be using identical Platu-25 sailboats. For competitive sailing buffs, match racing is the ultimate test of skill at sea; requiring not only the standard qualities of handling and tactical skill at high-speed, but also a profound knowledge of the rules of competitive sailing and the ability to envision an imaginative strategy to confront rivals and tackle the demands of the course.

More information on The Sani Cup 2015 – HMRT 2015 and the participants in the races will be released over the coming weeks.
