Volvo Ocean Race Leg 3 - Day 16

Dongfeng Race Team (Charles Caudrelier/FRA) continued to hold the edge in Leg 3 of the Volvo Ocean Race on Tuesday with the rest of the fleet bunched up behind and waiting for the opportunity to pounce.

For Caudrelier and his crew, the stage could not be more important: victory in Sanya would be the first time a Chinese boat has triumphed in a Volvo Ocean Race leg and the win would also take the team top of the overall standings.

At 0940 UTC on Tuesday, Dongfeng Race Team led by 29.4 nautical miles (nm) from Team Brunel (Bouwe Bekking/NED) with Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing (Ian Walker/GBR) hot on their heels 3.5nm further adrift.

The trio started Leg 3 from Abu Dhabi locked together on four points, but the 4,670nm stage to the southernmost point of China is still anyone's to win with around 2,500nm left for the fleet to sail.

MAPFRE (Xabi Fernández/ESP) and Team Alvimedica (Charlie Enright/USA) are both very much in touch five nautical miles behind with Team SCA (Sam Davies/GBR) still in the hunt, a further 25nm adrift.

The six-strong fleet – depleted of Team Vestas Wind (Chris Nicholson/AUS) – is expected to reach its destination around January 25-26 depending on weather conditions but first has to navigate through the Malacca Strait.

The 500nm stretch, dividing the Indonesian island of Sumatra and Malaysia, is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world and narrows to 1.5nm at one point. That bottleneck could well allow the chasing boats to catch Dongfeng Race Team – if they are still ahead at this point.

The boats will have to dodge all kinds of cargo vessels and all kinds of man-made rubbish.

That, however, lies in the future – the fleet is expected to arrive in the Strait by the weekend – and for now it is making good progress through the Bay of Bengal after passing Sri Lanka.

Polluted waters continue to threaten their advance. Bekking summed up in a blog: "There was so much plastic in the water that I started counting in several intervals of 10 minutes for a duration of four hours, the amount of plastic I could see floating by.

"A scary result was the outcome. Every 37 seconds on average I saw a piece floating by, either big or small. I am not a scientist or researcher, but the total weight of this rubbish floating around in this part of the world must be enormous."

Meanwhile, Team Vestas Wind (hull and rig) continued its long journey from Malaysia to Italy on a Maersk Line ship for an eventual rebuild at the Persico yard in Bergamo.

It is expected to arrive on January 25 and will be transported with the help of Race sponsors GAC Pindar from Genoa to Persico. The target is a return to the race for the final two legs from Lisbon in June.

Update from Dongfeng Race Team

"We have made a mistake, a silly, stupid mistake." – Charles Caudrelier

Or so he thought. The above comment was made on a video delivered from the boat last night where initial panic had set in that Dongfeng had taken too much of a risk trying to cut the corner of Sri Lanka to extend their lead on the fleet. As expected the shortcut resulted in Dongfeng being the first team to hit the wind shadow off the coast of Sri Lanka without knowing how long it would take them to exit it.

"The most stressful moment was when we were at a standstill and we could see the other boats catching up" said Caudrelier.

But as it turned out, the ballsy decision paid off. Having exited the wind shadow in no time at all, Dongfeng extended their lead to 30 nautical miles. Next up? What was meant to be a drag race to Sumatra and entrance to Malacca Straits now is getting more complex it seems, with the routing software suggesting half a dozen different routes!"

"Two more obstacles to jump on our route to our home port of Sanya. The wind shadows of India and Sri Lanka are behind us. The wind like a river doesn't like obstacles, and they try to go around them leaving a wind hole behind the mountain ranges and some big accelerations on the sides."

"We passed the 3000m peaks of Sri Lanka 300km off to avoid this trap and despite that we went through a 100km long windless area. Even if we were very afraid in the night when we saw the lights of Brunel and Azzam at just a few km's from us, we managed to get through first and rebuild our lead."

"Now we are aiming for the entrance to the Malacca Straits, about 5 days away, and there again there will be very light winds and a complex piece of navigation to manage. A difficult transition between northerly and easterly winds too."

"Dongfeng means the east wind, so we are hoping to be well looked after."

"Onboard we are focused but tired from the constant battle of nerves, nothing is ever for keeps on this leg, we need to fight for another 15 days to get our boat home."
