Brass Monkey Trophy Race at Leigh-on-Sea Sailing Club

The 2014 season at Leigh-on-Sea ended on Sunday 21st December with the classic end of season Brass Monkey Race. The weather forecast had predicted strong winds but at the start a moderate South Westerly encouraged 28 boats to start the race.

After a delay for the slow making tide, the fleet were keen to get on with the race; the result was a general recall. The second start saw the fleet better behaved as they set off on the first beat.

The fleet soon split into groups with the Sprint 15's leading with the Contender sailed by Chris Boshier in close attendance. Once everyone had identified the marks the fast reaches gave most crews an end of season thrill.

Unfortunately two of the Sprint 15's missed out the inner distance mark and their race places.

The race was managed using average lap times so some of the slower boats completed two laps in the hour race while the faster boats completed 3 laps.

After the results had been sorted first place went to Chris Boshier from Thorpe Bay, with a Sprint 15 sailed by Daren Fitchew also from Thorpe Bay second, and the GP14 of Richard Hamm / Steve Browne from Tollesbury SC third.
