A New SK2 Adventure...

A NEW SK2 ADVENTURE...

This weekend I will be taking the SK2 to the Datchet Flyer. I’m very much looking forward to the challenge of racing in a different boat and it will be really interesting to see how the boat performs against its provisional PY.

The prototype has been on the water for a few years and a production prototype was on show at last years dinghy show. The designers have been quite smart in not rushing to launch the boat as they have looked to make the boat as finished as possible before going on to create a class. I’ve sailed the boat on a number of occasions through its development, right back to when the first of the rigs were supplied by Selden. Each time I have had the chance to sail the boat there have been noticeable small improvements as the final product has been progressively finalised.

The concept itself is something many people will have seen on yachts, using a swinging keel to increase performance by moving ballast to windward and I’ve been impressed by how well it works. The boat is targeting a crew weight of around 200-230kg and at the weekend we will be sailing at around 220kg. With a varied wind forecast I’m excited to see how we fare.

The boat performance is impressive and with the rig tuning work and sail development completed lately we have been seeing steady 8 knots to windward and 18 knots offwind in open water. I think as sailors continue to find the best ways to push the boat these numbers will only increase. The performance is also manageable and delivered without any massive surprises and as such I think there are many people out there who will find sailing the SK2 really enjoyable.

If you would like more information on the SK2 then contact Oli Wells via email. The next outing will be the Grafham GP where a demo day is also planned for the Saturday.
