Revett Winter Series at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club - Day 2

Sunday 16th November saw the second week of the Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club Revett winter series and it was a case of deja-vu for those who had attended last Sunday as a very light breeze from the east brought some ripples on to the water. As the midday start drew near the wind moved to the north east and increased in strength to a Force 3 so a course was set around the cans for the non-Asymmetric fleets while the length of the beat allowed the Asymmetric fleet a windward/leeward course.

68 boats took to the water and the 14 strong Laser fleet was first away. Glynn Purnell (LLSC) took to the water for the first time in the series and went on to win the race by some distance. With the series leader Mark Lunn missing it was second in the series Mike Baldwin who took the opportunity to close the gap and he came home in second place with Ty Burrows (LLSC) rounding off the top three.

The 15 boat Asymmetric fleet went off next and it Paul Allen, crewed by Jude Allen (LLSC – RS400) that made the early running and, after a hard fought battle, managed to hold off Caroline Exley/Joe Hartigan (LLSC – RS400) as they crossed the line in that order however Greg Booth (Port Dinorwic SC – RS100 10.2) took the win on corrected time.

Last away were the 39 boats that started under the handicap fleet flag (this included 17 Solo and 10 junior boats the results of which will be abstracted at the end of the series and separate prizes awarded)

Handicap fleet wise it was once again the X1 of Alex Morrlson/Steve White (LLSC) who led from the start and pulled out such a lead that they sailed an extra lap from the rest of the fleet as the course was shortened for the slower boats in the fleet. Given this they still managed to work their way through the back end of their fleet. Second overall the Albacore national champion Mike Banner crewed by Kay Banner (LLSC) and the Enterprise of Ashley/Ross Southwell (LLSC) third.

In the Solo fleet it was series leader Innes Armstrong (Burwain SC) who took the win from Graeme Bristow (LLSC) in second and Patrick Hamilton (Burwain SC) third.

In this weeks junior fleet a few more Optimist joined in and it was one of these, Archie Leckie (LLSC), that took the bullet. For the third race of the series in a row Lorcan Knowles (LLSC – Topper) was second and new comer Joe Baker (Royal Windermere YC – Topper) in third.

After lunch the breeze had reduced to a Force 2 but was still from the same direction. After one lap the breeze then went to the north, making the course one sided, and began to drop which led to a shortened course and a finish before the Flash became a mill pond which it did for the back markers.

In the Lasers it was Glynn Purnell who carried on where he left off as he took another win. Paul Graham (Burwain SC) came home in second and Stuart Belfield was third.

In the Asymmetries Hamish Gledhill/Simon Dowse (West Riding SC – RS400) took an early lead but ended up running over their kite after a drop at the leeward mark. This allowed the Allens through who then went on to take the win. The RS200 of Martin/Sian Joesbury (LLSC) finished second on corrected time (and such was their boat speed that they may have had a similar result in the first race if they hadn't have missed going through the line on one of the laps) Having thrown back the fish they caught during their trawling moment Gledhill/Dowse managed to get back into the race to finish third

The top two places in the handicap fleet were the same as in the previous race with Mark Cuthbert (LLSC - Super Nova) coming home in third.

In the Solos Innes Armstrong took another win with club mate Hamilton going one better than the last race to finish second and Brian Sprague (LLSC) third.

The top two places in the junior fleet were taken by the Optimists of Archie Leckie and Olivia Cuthbert (LLSC) while Lorcan Knowles had to settle for third.
